Creating a forum account
« on: Tuesday, 18 Sep 2007, 23:01:29 »
In order to post and view certain sections of this site, you will need to register. For this, you will need to enter a valid email address, this could of course be a special address you can set-up just for this forum, i.e. it does not have to be your personal email account.

If you're using a free email account, e.g. hotmail, check your spam folder as freebie email accounts tend to be quite strict about where an email comes from. Hotmail.co.uk is particularly grumpy about this, although hotmail.com is OK.

After you have registered, please check you email for one coming from Prophecy, this should appear within 15mins, but can sometimes take an hour or so. Follow the instructions in this email to activate your forum account.

If you have problems creating an account, or activating one
You can email the Administrator, that's me. You might want to do this because you didn't receive the activation email - but before you do that, please wait an hour, just in case the email system at your end is being a bit rubbish.

When you email me, please use the email account you registered with - I simply won't activate an account unless I have evidence it's really you. So here's the email: webadmin[at]flippancy[dot]net.

I'll then be able to manually activate your account. You'll get another email telling when your account has been activated, but since your spam filter is blocking it, please allow 24hrs - time for me to check my email and activate your account.

When you return (after 24hrs), just try logging back in. If it works, then fine, if not contact me in-game - Flippantine, or Loci. If you can't find me, ask a guildie for an officer to /poke me about your forum registration. Please do explain what you're doing, otherwise they'll just stare at you as if you're a gnome, or even worse a troll.

Note: Once you've activated your account, take a moment to view your account settings - click the Profile tab to do this. It includes things like hiding your email address from everyone, except the Administrator. By default, your email address can only be viewed by Approved Members; these are people who are members of the guild.

Anti-Spam Measures - an improvement
I've recently installed another add-on for this website's forum application, the add-on will test whether your username, email and IP are registered with spam accounts.

There's a small chance your account will be logged as 'spam' and therefore requires an admin to look more closely at your details before your account can be activated.

This means you can't login or post until I've looked at your request for an online account.

Normally...
  • You register with this site
  • An email arrives in your inbox asking you to confirm/verify your request to set-up an account here
  • You click on the email link to verify your account
  • You can then post away on our forums :)

But... if I think you 'might' be a spammer
There's a small chance that some of your details (typically your IP and email) are solid matches for spammers. This doesn't mean you are a spammer, but it does mean I'll decline your registration without notifying you (because I can't confirm your online identity).

When I do this, you won't get an email asking you to verify/confirm your registration - you'll get an error when trying to login which says no such account exists.

If you've registered for an account, but never receive confirmation of your account being approved or a request to authenticate your details, please contact me in-game [Flippantine or Loci, or... ask a Guildie for where I am].

Most people have no problems registering with this site and posting their application.

Finally..
Please remember, in order to register with the site you will need to use a real email address that you can check. If you don't get your verification/confirmation email after registering, please check your spam folder - free accounts like Hotmail will almost certainly get grumpy with emails which have been sent by a website.

The email you use doesn't have to be your 'personal' email account, you can set-up one especially for this site - and I in fact encourage you to do that, it's good pratice to use a special email address for any non-personal site registrations (i.e. not banking, blaa blaa stuff).
